My Review: After the whirlwind of reading Dugoni's first book in his Tracy Crosswhite series, My Sister's Grave a few weeks ago you can bet that I was more than eager to read Her Final Breath, the second book in the series which picks up where My Sister's Grave left off.I enjoyed how Dugoni brought one of Tracy's previous cases that was mentioned in the first book to the forefront here. As a reader it's great when books in a series are intertwined with story arcs and characters. Once again Dugoni's attention to detail is evident as he weaves his stories which are a perfect mix of police procedural, suspense and mystery. He gives his readers twists that kept me guessing and second guessing who I thought had 'dunnit'. There were many suspects which makes for good red herrings but, I will admit, sometimes made it harder to figure out who was who among the characters. While this was another great read by Dugoni but I didn't love it quite as much. Dugoni had some mighty big literary shoes to fill since I adored My Sister's Grave (and gave it a very rare 5 stars). Unfortunately I didn't find myself as emotionally invested in Her Final Breath and it wasn't quite as riveting as My Sister's Grave which was non-stop suspense. This time around there's still a lot of tension and twists abound but Dugoni lets the reader come up for air in between periods of suspense. The reader gets to see another side of Tracy - as part of the Seattle Police Department's Violent Crime Squad. Some characters from the first book make appearances and there are some new characters introduced as the reader is made privy to Tracy's professional life. These include her partner, Kinsington Rowe (whom I hope makes more appearances in future books) and Tracy's notoriously nasty, ornery and back stabbing Captain Nolasco. Man, I love to hate that guy!Tracy is once again a tenacious and strong main character who has her sights set on finding this killer and a stalker. She's easy to root for and has enough turmoil in her life to be believable but not overdone.Dan, Tracy's romantic interest, whom we met in the first book continues to be by Tracy's side. While their relationship is sweet it sometimes feels like he's a little too good to be true and this time around he felt more superfluous because he didn't really add much to the suspense or plot. I'd like to see more issues between them or something dark from Dan's past brought to the surface to spice things up. These two have been through so much but it doesn't seem to have affected their relationship very much.Note: While it's not necessary to read My Sister's Grave before taking on this book I highly recommend reading this series in order. Dugoni does a good job filling in some of the blanks if the reader hasn't read the first book but reading the books in order will give the reader a much more well-rounded look at relationships and larger story arcs that spread between the books.Once again Dugoni proves he has a knack for setting up his plot and slowly building suspense so that all of a sudden the reader finds that they cannot put the book down for any length of time. This was an enjoyable read and a great addition to what is becoming a favourite suspense series of mine.My Rating: 4/5 starsDisclaimer: My sincere thanks to Thomas and Mercer and NetGalley for providing me with a complimentary e-book copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.**This book review can also be found on my blog, The Baking Bookworm (www.thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca) where I share hundreds of book reviews and my favourite recipes. **

This novel was a little predictable, but I like the main character and the writing style of the author. I was a bit disappointed in the ending and was hoping for a different outcome, but in hind-sight I guess it was appropriate. This novel has two story lines, which I liked, but it seemed to get in the way of what appears to be the main story line. I do like how the author incorporated aspects of the previous novels and in this story it calls the reader back to those scenes. I like that because, while at the time they seemed incidental, they are pivotal to the stories in this novel.

Robert Dugoni has done it again. my only regret is that I have to wait until May for the 3rd book in the series to be published for kindle :( .the book is well written, the story unfolds very well. The characters are, once again, perfect for the story line. Tracey and her team work so well together. There are bad guys of a different type in this book. To understand that, you must read it. But it is a read worthwhile for sure. You get absorbed into the story, and you feel what the characters feel, remorse, pain, fear, the adrenalin spiking and all that goes with it. You know how sometimes you are watching a show, or a movie, and you just want to take your hand and smack one of the characters across the face? Well, this book makes you want to do that to one in particular. I still feel like slapping him silly, and I finished the book last night.Take this book, curl up on the couch with a blanket [if your weather has turned chilly like ours just did] and enjoy the time reading this one.

This book is pretty good as far as your basic crime novels go, but there is a gaping hole in the plot that I couldn't get past. The premise is that a serial killer is targeting women, but not sexually assaulting them as would be expected. All of the victims are noted to have had no signs of having sexual contact within 72 hours of the attack in order to make it clear that this is not part of the killer's MO. But in order to frame other suspects, it is also said that the killer specifically makes his move *right after* the women have been with other men that they were intimate with, usually within the hour. So they absolutely would have shown signs of sexual activity and the detectives wouldn't have been able to say until the truth came out that it wasn't with the killer. You can't have it both ways! Not sure if the author didn't put this together or was just hoping no one else would just because it served different aspects of the story for both contradictory ideas to be true.So the book was good for mindless entertainment, but I get annoyed when there are glaring inconsistencies like this.

Better written than the first book, though frequent mentions here of a mysterious absence from Seattle, for the trial in that first Tracy Crosswhite adventure, are rather clunky. Surely the northern Cascades region, (Leavenwirth, Chelan, etc), is not so far from Seattle that a major absence from the SPD would have been required. It's almost like she had to take time out for a trip to Mars!As mentioned in my review of the first book, the author's use of the New York Ital/English term "couple days" is far more frequently thrown around here and becomes very annoying, very quickly. Outside NYC, pretty much the whole rest of the English-speaking world says "a couple of days".Another quibble here is that towards the end, THE END was clearly in sight, at least as far as the author was concerned. What suspense had been building was suddenly discarded for a mad rush to get to the big reveal. No exploration of Tracy's reduced duties, no further exploration of Nolasco's activities in this time - just a sudden jump to WHAM-BAM-IT-MUST-BE-THIS-GUY-GUNS-DRAWN-SHOWDOWN.There are decent stories in these two books, and they'd both have been considerably improved on with an editor not afraid to use the red pen.
