RestBy Alex Soojung-Kim Pang

One of Silicon Valley's sharpest strategists shows that success doesn't demand longer, harder hours, it demands that you work lessFor most of us, overwork is the new normal and rest is an afterthought. In our busy lives, rest is defined as the absence of work: late-night TV binges, hours spent trawling the internet, something to do once we've finished everything else on our to-do lists. But dismissing rest stifles our ability to think creatively and truly recharge. In Rest, Silicon Valley consultant Alex Pang argues that we can be more successful in all areas of our lives by recognizing the importance of rest: working better does not mean working more, it means working less and resting better. Treating rest as a passive activity secondary to work undermines our chances for a rewarding and meaningful life. Whether by making space for daily naps, as Winston Churchill did during World War II; going on hours-long strolls like Charles Darwin; or spending a week alone in a cabin like Bill Gates, pursuing what Pang calls "deliberate rest" is the true key to fulfillment and creative success. Drawing on rigorous scientific evidence and revelatory historical examples, Rest overturns everything our culture has taught us about work and shows that only by resting better can we start living better

Review "I recommend Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less, by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang...The title says it all-if you're prone to burnout or still believe that overwork actually works, this book will set you straight."-Arianna Huffington in an interview with Lifehacker.com"[Pang] argues convincingly that the focus on work, often measured in long hours spent at the workplace, is a modern construct."-Nilanjana Roy, Financial Times"This is a book of deep wisdom and human insight."-Chauncey Mabe, Success"Rest is a brilliant book, and a timely reminder that rest needs to be deliberate, or our work will become debilitating."-800 CEO Read"Consider this a much-needed guide for the overworked: a credible, factual case for chilling out and getting rest, by a well-known Silicon Valley consultant."-VanityFair.com "[T]here's another force transforming the way we work, and that is: nonwork. Or, more specifically, what we're doing in those few hours when we're not working. With Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less, Alex Soojung-Kim Pang superbly illuminates this phenomenon and helps push it along... Rest is such a valuable book. If work is our national religion, Pang is the philosopher reintegrating our bifurcated selves."-Arianna Huffington, New York Times Book Review"[Pang] writes with an admirable focus on balance, on pleasure as well as success; in the end, it's difficult to argue with his conclusions."-Kate Tuttle, Boston Globe "Blending scientific research with examples of writers, painters and thinkers, from Darwin to Stephen King, the author exposes how we have underestimated the power of rest for our success." -Daily Examiner (Australia)"A useful holiday gift at a time when New Year's resolutions will be on the agenda."-Kirkus Reviews "Finally, a full-throated, exhaustively researched argument for why we should all work less and rest more-not just because we'll feel better (no small thing) but because we'll actually be more creative and productive as a result."-Mason Currey, author of Daily Rituals: How Artists Work"I love this book. Rest weaves fascinating research and captivating stories into a wise prescription for a healthier, more creative, and more fulfilling life in a technology saturated world. At heart, it is rest, in the many ways Pang describes, that contributes to our ability to be the best of what we can be." -Linda Stone, Former Executive, Apple and Microsoft "Alex Pang wants us to treat work and rest as equals. In his fascinating, well-researched and highly readable new book Rest, he makes an excellent case for the critical importance of rest in our lives, drawing from the rest habits of some of our most famous scientists, writers and creatives from history, from neuroscience research as well as examples from some of the most productive people working today. You will consider how and why you rest in a completely new light after reading this book."-Wendy Suzuki, Ph.D. Professor of Neural Science and Psychology at New York University and author of Healthy Brain Happy Life: A personal program to activate your brain and do everything better"You're holding some terrific advice in your hands on the virtues of walking, napping, and playing. Pang has written a delightful and thought-provoking book on the science of restful living."-Clive Thompson, columnist for Wired magazine and the author of Smarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better"It's high noon for the global economy's thinking class, who are locked in a losing battle for clarity in a crowded, clickable world. This book is a science-packed call to arms: it's time to claim rest as a right and pay close attention to the needs of our beleaguered brains."-Anthony Townsend, author of Smart Cities: Big Data, Civic Hackers, and the Quest for a New Utopia"Finally, indisputable proof that to raise happy, healthy, and productive adults, parents and educators must teach the next generation how to practice intentional rest; ... how to partner work with play, exercise, and sleep." -Nanci Kauffman, Head of Castilleja School"In his important new book, Pang calmly and meticulously shows us how the best, most creative work, and the most meaningful and joyful lives, are built on the skills, not of mindless busyness, but of deliberate rest, deep play, and taking time to think. A game-changing book for the weary modern world." -Brigid Schulte, award-winning journalist and author of the New York Times bestselling Overwhelmed: Work, Love, and Play When No One Has the Time

From the Author I became interested in the importance of rest in creative lives began when I noticed a paradox: many of history's most accomplished thinkers, artists, writers, and composers organized their lives around their work, but not their days. Figures as diverse as Charles Darwin, Salvador Dali, and Maya Angelou think about their work constantly, and achieve much more than most of us, yet they spend fewer hours laboring than we do. What accounts for their success? The key is not the quantity of their work, but the quality of their rest. Many super-creative and -productive people take a distinctive approach to rest.

  • They see rest as a skill: like speaking or running, it's something we all do naturally, and can learn to do better.
  • They learn to harness mind-wandering: they develop habits that give their brains a break, or give their unconscious minds time to explore new ideas.
  • They treat rest with respect, and make time for it in their daily schedules.
  • They recognize rest as a resource that can extend their creative lives.
Rest blends history, biography, and recent work in neuroscience and psychology to uncover the critical but under-recognized role rest plays in the lives of creative people. It shows how creative figures structure their days to make good use of rest, and why long walks, afternoon naps, vigorous exercise, and "deep play" stimulate creative work and sustain creative lives.

I love the illustrations in this book, as well as, the story. Great for ages 4 and up. My daughter really enjoys the Madeline books. I do suggest though purchasing them hardback. I bought this one paperback and wished I wouldn't have.

This is a favorite story, however DO NOT buy the Kindle version. Total waste of money. It's like looking at bad photos of an old book. I'm incredibly disappointed.

It's a lovely book but terrible on Kindle. This is not a Kindle version... it's like a badly scanned PDF.

There is simply NO WAY to give Bemelmans' wonderful illustrations and stories less than five stars..if more stars were available I'd give him those too. No one else has ever captured the beauty and romance of the city for children as well as he.The end papers and one illustration show the ile de cite, the pont neuf and the small park on the isle where now the tour boats are docked. That's all specially meaningful to me because it is from the bridge and into the Seine that I threw the key to the lock I secured to the bridge, honoring the love my deceased wife and I had for each other. In the little park below my grandaughters husband proposed to her.

I ordered this book to bring to a baby shower - I’d read Madeline as a child and the art is so iconic. But I returned this book and got them something else at the last minute, for a few reasons:-My copy that was shipped to me was torn by a sticker in the packaging-There is a slur on the back cover that I didn’t realize would be there - times have changed-I realized this is the book that gave me a lifelong fear of appendicitis that was especially strong in my childhood, and I remember wishing I had never read about such a thing that instilled this fear in me, so I didn’t want to pass that on to another kid

Ludwig Bemelman's MADELINE first appeared in the early 1950s. It was a hit then and generations later, it still evokes that, "Please read it to me again," in children. Or better yet, it's one of those books that they later read to themselves.Although most young kids don't know about orphans and living in an orphanage, they immediately bond with little Madeline. Children enjoy its cadence and rhyming (not at all like Dr. Seuss' books). It's less obvious and a bit more sophisticated.Depending on a child's age and cognitive level, this book can go from simply entertaining (1) to broadening a child's knowledge (2), to higher order reading skills (3). Examples: (1) Reading a story; (2) What's an orphanage? Where is France? Do children speak English there? Tell me, what is the big, grey thing on the book's cover? (3) Do you think the girls are all happy to share a big bedroom? If you were Madeline, how would you feel? Why do we have an appendix?Taken at face value, this classic is a lovely tale. But, it can also be a springboard for meaningful conversations.

This is a review of the Kindle version. The formatting is horrendous. It is simply a scan of the book. Multiple pages on each kindle page that you have to zoom I'm on to read. Totally ruins the story and beautiful illustrations. It should be a crime to do that to a wonderful book like this.

I wanted to have a special quiet time activity for my grand-daughter. As I am reading Madeline books to her I thought this book would be fun. Boy was I wrong! It is GREAT fun! It is well made, the stickers are that plastic that is easy to re-use, and the sticker pages are large and colorful. Terrific for a four year old and her granny!
