The challenge for any reader in opening Dr. Michele Borba's book " Unselfie " is having the ability to put it down. Be prepared to be captivated with her practical insights, empirical data and common sense approach in raising children to be kind, caring and empathetic individuals in our global community. In reading UnSelfie, Dr. Michele Borba has been able to answer the question many parents desire to know: "what do kids really need to be happy and successful?" Her research, passion and life experiences in reaching out to people throughout the world has given her the answer. The answer is not complicated to understand, but totally goes against a society that has become self absorbed! Her answer cannot be any more clear to the reader, it is EMPATHY, a quality that has to be taught. In this book, Dr. Borba has captured the essence of empathy. Through her many years of scientific research , she has come up with 9 essentials habits and many practical strategies to equip children with the tools to help them live a happy, successful life. She identifies it as the "Empathy Advantage".This book is not only for parents and educators, it is for young couples planning to enter parenthood, health care providers, social workers, grandparents and any other person who has the privilege in being an instrumental role model in a child's life. While reading this thought provoking and inspiring book, I concluded this book is not just about helping children to be empathetic individuals, it is also an opportunity for adults to reflect on whether or not they need to consider if the Empathy Advantage could become more of an integral part in their own life. Empathy can be taught and it is never too late to learn!Terry Gill

While I did like the book and found many useful ideas, this is a book I will have to come back to once my own children are in elementary school. Most of the ideas and lessons are for school-aged children, although there are a few that you can start from preschool age. There is a key for each activity section that says All, L (little kids; toddlers and preschoolers), S (school age), T (teens), etc, but I found quite a lot of the activities for little kids to be too advanced for my 3 year old. For now, I’ll do what I did find she-appropriate, and I will definitely re-read this when my children are older.

I am an elementary school counselor and I love this book. It has made me view things differently. I am now working harder to incorporated teaching empathy to my students in my guidance lessons.

Great book. Learning to guide children towards the full, loving life you envision for them can feel daunting but Unselfie thoughtfully and practically explains how empathy can empower children to succeed. The ideas in this book are easily implemented. The story-filled chapters make reading enjoyable. I can’t recommend this book enough.

Abraham Lincoln famously stated, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” (He paraphrased Jesus’ words in his acceptance speech for the Illinois senate.) In our contemporary world rife with contention, anger, fear and violence, never has the need to join hands and work together been more important. In our families, schools, communities and countries our ability to thrive and succeed requires communal effort, mutual respect and individual contribution.Michele Borba, Ed.D has penned, UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World, a gem of a book that asserts that when they operate with empathy, not only do our children, families and communities feel and function better for everyone, but also that holy grail of American philosophy–one’s ability to achieve personal SUCCESS-dramatically improves. She outlines why parents’ best strategy for supporting their kids success is to teach them how to be empathetic.Borba points out just as families must encourage (expect) academic achievement, parents must set clear expectations for our kids to live a life based on values and empathy. In the absence of regular nurturing, practice and acknowledgement, the fragile bud of empathy and values-based behavior withers and “me first” “not-my-problem” mentality replaces it.Emotional literacy, empathy, and, an internalized moral compass don’t just happen. Parents must intentionally teach, model, encouraged, and reinforce empathy. We need teach our family values with intention, clarify, and commitment.( The Swift* family is kind. The Swift* family helps. The Swift* family respects others, etc.,) We parents must routinely express our expectation that our children will live according to those values. When our kids follow through, we need to notice, affirm and reinforce that commitment to living with in the family value frame. As a culture we are quick to encourage and acknowledge academic and athletic excellence. We must elevate empathy to the same high regard. Why should adoptive parents embrace her idea? Through the lens of Intentional parenting, we often focus on emotional literacy and on fostering an environment which attunes to emotional states and welcomes the honest expression of those feelings–the happy, the sad, and the “ugly.” We understand that human beings are “feeling” beings and that emotions influence our thoughts, beliefs and behavior. We get that.Borba invites us to graduate to a higher appreciation of the need for emotional resonance, one that understands that by attuning with empathy to emotions –ours and those around us– we activate the highest plane of our humanity. We see other points of view, hear other ideas, and communicate instead of talking at one another.And. Everyone. Benefits. When we recognize the impact of our choices and actions have on others and work to cooperate instead of stepping on others to boost ourselves, something wonderful happens: stress diminishes, bullying lessens, health improves and everyone not only has a better “shot” at success, more people achieve success and feel better about themselves and others in the process. She asserts that empathy is foundational to the development of a moral identity. Sound to good to be true? Her well-researched book includes much documentation that supports her point of view and the improvements which increased empathy produced in schools, communities and families. This book overflows with simple, effective and practical ideas for how to nurture empathy because it is a skill parents can teach. Anyone can learn to be empathetic. She shares many strategies for “developing, practicing, and living empathy.” Many are brilliantly simple.PLEASE read this book. Our world needs more Intentional, empathetic and attuned families.#TogetherWeSucceed As adoptive families people often question the validity of our families or see them as slightly less connected. We know how it feels to have to defend our legitimacy. If instead, people cultivated a more empathetic POV, they would see that we love as deeply and are as connected and real as their own. --Gayle H. Swift, "ABC, Adoption & Me"

First off, I will buy this book as a gift for all new parents I know!I will use this information and share with educators in my work on developing positive school culture---can't wait!. I have always been a fan of Dr. Michelle Borba and have heard her speak many times. I have always admired her passion and insight on reducing bullying in schools and now this book---I am promoting it everywhere! Thank you for doing the research, being in the field, talking to children, and increasing our awareness on how to best raise children. This book should be used in all parenting classes.Dr. Debbie SacksTwitter: @debrasacksdsacks@clsteam.net

As a mother, grandmother, and former teacher, I have spent most of my life around children. We should all be striving to help guide this next generation to be successful, giving, empathic young people and adults. This book has made clear the task before us and the practical means by which we can participate in this endeavor. Thank you, Dr. Borba, for sharing your gifts with us in yet another masterful book - Unselfie.

I have always wanted to write a book, but have had difficulty in finding a subject for which I was both knowledgeable and passionate, and which has not been covered by other writers. I finally came up with a great topic this summer. It was one of those moments where the goal suddenly seem crystal clear, but I did not know the path to reach it. I was prepared to pursue the self-publishing route. However, I felt my subject was an important one that deserved more "professional" respect and visibility than might be garnered by a self-published book.I knew I would have to write a book proposal. As a novice author, I had no idea about the mechanics of the proposal process and how to maximize my chances of success. I researched several books on Amazon, and "Thinking Like Your Editor" seemed to fit my requirements precisely. It was a good choice. I very much appreciated the authors' approach. This book provided the "tough love" necessary to ensure that I was very focused on what I wanted to say. It was also reassuring to read that I didn't have to have everything figured out before submitting a book proposal - that in fact is was better NOT to have gone too far down the writing path before submitting the proposal. This book offers excellent tips on how to write effectively. It contains many illustrative examples of writing that misses the mark, and suggestions for how to improve your impact. Finally, I like that the book emphasizes the importance of narrative even in non-fiction. You're not writing a term paper or dissertation. A book needs to tell a compelling story, which many technical writers forget. That advice helped me hone my approach to my subject.I found a potential publisher through research on the web, looking up publishers of books in topics related to the one I wanted to write. I filled out their application. I also appended a detailed table of contents using the format suggested in "Thinking Like Your Editor," even though a table of contents was not called for in the application process.I submitted my application on a Monday, and on Friday that week, I got an email that my proposed book would be an excellent fit in this publisher's series on Space Exploration. I had a contract within two weeks.I highly recommend the book for anyone who is seriously interested in getting a book published. Even if you decide to self-publish, the advice in this book will be invaluable in helping you write a book that people will want to read. You still have to do all the heavy lifting, but this book gives you a plan for achieving your goals.Thank you to Alfred Fortunato and Susan Rabiner for putting me on the path to finally writing that book I've always wanted to write!

I bought five books to help me write a book proposal:"How to Write a Book Proposal, 3rd edition," by Michael Larsen"78 Reasons Why Your Book May Never Be Published & 14 Reasons Why It Just Might," by Pat Walsh"The Forest for the Trees," by Betsy Lerner"The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published, 4th edition," by Sheree Bykofsky and Jennifer Basye Sander"Think Like Your Editor," by Susan Rabiner and Alfred FortunadoThe worst was "How to Write a Book Proposal." This book felt like a bad date, like I wanted to wash my hair after reading it. The intent is to teach you to be an "Authorpreneur (r)." Yes, Larsen has registered this word. You'll learn such gems as everyone has 250 friends, and each of them has 250 friends, so you can "spread the word" about your book to more than 62,000 people by e-mail. I think there's a word for that -- spam. Larsen also says to include your promotion plan in the book proposal, including pushing "the paperback edition as hard as you can" when it's published a year after the hardcover edition. I'm not an agent or editor, but I'd think that an agent would giggle quietly to themselves if you were so presumptuous as to include a marketing plan for the paperback edition. (To the author's credit, he doesn't say you should suggest which actor should play the main character in the movie version of your book.) Then there's the chapter about including illustrations and cover art. Excuse me, I thought the editor and art director develop the cover art? I can't imagine creating the book cover to include in the proposal. And the author recommends including a "surprise," such as a baby shoe with a note saying "Now that I have a foot in the door." The book has one good piece of advice: pick a good title. For example, "How to Write a Book Proposal" is a title that will make 100,000 aspiring writers buy your book, regardless of how awful the book is."78 Reasons" was good. Some sections are wrong, such as #38 and #39, which correctly advises against paying for a vanity press to publish your book but confuses this with self-publishing. I've successfully self-published two books, and unsuccessfully self-published one book. The correct answer is that if you have a niche book in a niche market you know well, self-publish. Self-publishing mass market books is a recipe for disaster. Some of the advice is excellent, such as #16, about "killing your little darlings" (a scene you think is brilliant, that you build the rest of the book around). While most of this book is sound advice to a novice writer, as an experienced writer I didn't learn anything new."The Complete Idiot's Guide" covers the entire process from thinking of an idea through book proposals, book contracts, publicity tours, etc. It's a good overview but each chapter is too short. You'll need to buy another book about book proposals, etc. I'm keeping my copy as a reference to turn to occasionally but it's not the last word."The Forest for the Trees" starts with six essays about writing, with topics such as alcoholism, self-promoting poets (starting with Walt Whitman), the childhood of famous writers, writers who are too successful too young, etc. These are interesting reading. The second half of the book is essays about publishing, starting with literary agents. One paragraph describes the plethora of surprise gifts writers include with their query letters. She's received baby shoes, presumably from readers of Larsen's book. She says: "Please resist the temptation to do any of these outlandish things...a simple, dignified letter with a clear statement of your intent and credentials will win more affirmative responses than any gimmick or hype." If you read Larsen's book, read Lerner's book as the antidote. The next essays are about dealing with rejection, the life of editors, what writers want from editors, how book covers are designed, book titles selected, etc. This book is descriptive, not proscriptive, so you'll learn how the world of books operates, if not be told how to write a book and get it published. I enjoyed the author's "voice" and I recommend this book. The best book is "Thinking Like Your Editor." The first half of the book is about preparing your book proposal. Unlike the other four books, reading this book made me completely rewrite my book proposal. The author begins by emphasizing the three most important things about a book: audience, audience, and audience. Who is going to buy your book? Not who might be sort of interested in your book, but who will feel that he or she must read your book. I'd thought about this before, but reading Rabiner's book made me think lucidly about this. She then walks you through the elements that must be in a book proposal, such as your thesis, or what makes your message unique and new and challenging; why is now the time to publish this book; and why are you the person most qualified to write it. The second half of the book is about writing your book, including the importance of narrative tension in non-fiction writing, and of presenting a balanced "argument" to make your views more convincing. The other four books made me say, "uh-huh, uh-huh" and not do anything. Rabiner's book made me spend several days working on my proposal. (My 2003 paperback copy has the typos corrected.)

"Thinking Like Your Editor: How to Write Great.....l"I've read this important book by Rabiner and Fortunato twice, underlined practically every page and am circling for my third run of reading it again. Of all the books one can have for a writer wishing to publish, this is the tome of tomes. It is daunting, at times humorous, but most important contains the exquisite advice of a person who knows. Susan Rabiner has years of experience in publishing and editing. This book is not a quick read and a feel good light piece. It is clearly an important book to have for both research and how to, and to dispel the myths of publishing. It should NOT collect dust on the shelf but be embraced, frankly, daily during the challenging process of readying a book for market.

Excellent book that focuses specifically on writing a non-fiction book and preparing it for publishing. It's written from an editor's point of view(as the title tells you) and also from the perspective of a literary agent, so it has a lot of inside information, you might say. It's written from the point of view of the standard publishing house/author relationship, as of its publication date, so is less geared towards the growing self-publishing market. But believe me, it is invaluable for people pursuing that route too. Perhaps even more valuable since they likely will not have the added advantage of encountering an editor's point of view, in terms especially of aiming for a particular market. I've got a good deal of insight form it already that has changed my intentions somewhat. I've just about finished reading it, and will go back and read several parts again. That's how useful I judge this book to be.

Pondering Over The Qur'an: Surah al-Fatiha and Surah al-BaqarahBy Amin Ahsan Islahi

This English translation of the tafsir of Surah al-Fatihah and Surah al-Baqarah is part of the eight-volume Urdu tafsir, Tadabbur-e-Qur’an (Pondering over the Qur’an). This tafsir is based on the principle of coherence, and is perhaps the first sustained and successful attempt to demonstrate such coherence and to refute the oft-repeated allegation of the lack of order or integrity in the Qur’an. Without recognising and appreciating the coherence of the Qur’an, one may gain knowledge of certain commandments and teachings but will remain ignorant of the Qur’anic wisdom (hikmah) contained in its beautifully integrated and holistic message. The Urdu original was first published in 1967, the result of the life-long work of Amin Ahsan Islahi (1904-1997), a pre-eminent scholar of the Qur’an.

Most people wouldn't expect a schoolteacher to amass a million-dollar investment account. But Andrew Hallam did so, long before the typical retirement age. And now, with Millionaire Teacher, he wants to show you how to follow in his footsteps. With lively humor and the simple clarity you'd expect from a gifted educator, Hallam demonstrates how average people can build wealth in the stock market by shunning the investment products peddled by most financial advisors and avoiding the get-rich-quicker products concocted by an ever widening, self-serving industry. Using low-cost index funds, coupled with a philosophy in line with the one that made Warren Buffett a multi-billionaire, Hallam guides listeners to understand how the stock and bond markets really work, arming you with a psychological advantage for when markets fall. • Shows why young investors should hope for stock market crashes if they want to get rich. • Explains how you can spend just 60 minutes a year on your investments, never open a financial paper, avoid investment news, and still leave most professional investors in the dust. • Promotes a unique new investment methodology that combines low cost index funds and a Warren Buffett-esque investment philosophy. Millionaire Teacher explains how any middle-income individual can learn the ABCs of personal finance and become a multi-millionaire, from a schoolteacher who has been there and done that.

Q&A with Author Andrew Hallam
Author Andrew Hallam You've published personal finance articles for years. But this is your first book. Why do you think so many of the world's most respected personal finance authors have embraced your book so enthusiastically?
I think my book has a couple of differences to most personal finance books. First, it's very easy to understand—even for someone who knows nothing about finances. Second, it's real: I followed this advice myself, building a million dollar portfolio on a modest salary, at a relatively young age. My book doesn't just espouse financial theory, but it shows how I utilized that theory in real life.

And I chuckled while writing it, so readers get a chance to see my quirky sense of humor.

To be honest, many of the great endorsements I received came from my financial heroes---people who literally changed my life at a very young age, by teaching me (through their writing) the sound financial concepts that don't get taught in schools. My book espouses very similar, common sense messages about living below your means, investing effectively in low cost index funds, and thinking correctly about stock market swings (young people, for instance, should rejoice when the stock markets fall).

Why should anyone rejoice when stock markets fall?
Anyone with a job (who intends to keep working for a number of years) should prefer stagnating or falling stock markets. Foundations for great wealth are never established by purchasing stock market investments that are rising in value. Instead, we lay foundations for huge wealth when we enthusiastically buy assets that are cheap. For instance, the stock markets in the U.S. jumped up and down from 1965 to 1982 (17 years) without going anywhere. Most people, during this 17 year period, were growing distrustful of the stock market because they hadn’t made any money. But for patient investors who regularly invested during those 17 years, they were seriously rewarded when the markets erupted nearly 1,700 percent in the following 18 year period. All of those stock market assets they previously bought, at low prices, rose significantly during the next 18 year period (from 1982-2000). People who didn't start buying until the stock market started getting more expensive, voluntarily gave up significant, future riches.

The stock markets haven't made much headway in the past decade. Does that mean this is a good time to invest?
It seems counter-intuitive, but yes. And when the stock markets are volatile, or not moving much, the media is always suggesting that stocks are a bad investment—and that you should seek financial safety elsewhere. For 200 years, the same story has played out over and over again. The general population is always afraid of the stock market when it's most attractive, and they love investing when it gets more and more expensive to do so.

I'm currently preparing to teach a personal finance class to high school kids. And I'm going to show them a huge, long-term stock market chart, spanning the past 200 years. Then I'll ask them: "Show me what would have been the best 15 year historical time periods to plough money into the stock markets, on a monthly basis." Simply by asking them questions (and not giving them the answers) they'll quickly see, without me telling them, that the best times to regularly add money to the markets have always been when markets were stagnant or falling. And coincidentally, media headlines have always been scariest during those times as well! To maximize wealth, my students—and readers of my book---will need to think long term, not short term. And they'll learn to ignore the media.

Your book is a withering critique of the financial service industry. Why is that?
I definitely join the chorus of investment academics who believe that the investment business is (mostly) a giant scam, filled with empty promises and high fees, which hurt the average investor's returns. The big picture is pretty shocking. Take this example: If you had put $10,000 in the AVERAGE global stock, in 1981, and held it until today, with all reinvested dividends, it would be worth nearly $200,000 by 2011. I’m not talking about buying Microsoft or Apple shares, I’m talking about the average stock. But if you ask people who were investing 30 years ago, how many of them turned $10,000 into $200,000, you probably wouldn't find anyone who had. Most investors deal with brokers and financial advisors who skim money off the top, in fees that may appear small---but aren't. And people also become victims to the silly decisions that many brokers and advisors make.

You can find advisors without a conflict of interest (which my book shows) but you can also easily invest your own money. Warren Buffett suggests that, as an aggregate, financial advisors don't tend to add value. And I agree with him.

From the Inside Flap

As a high school teacher Andrew Hallam is aware of what kind of personal finance education you probably received in school. While you were memorizing the names of dead presidents, battling with trigonometry and laboring over a periodic table of elements, you were probably getting short-changed on the basics of money.

So he wants to make it up to you: with Millionaire Teacher-Nine Rules of Wealth You Should Have Learned in School.

This isn’t a get-rich quick scheme. It is, however, the same time-tested, evidence-based plan that allowed Mr. Hallam to become a millionaire on a teacher’s salary.

Journey with him to explore what most wealthy people already know: if you spend your money responsibly, you can eventually grow rich.

Let him guide you to evidence-based investment strategies of index funds, and laugh when you learn how to whip the pants off most finance professionals, while spending just an hour and a half each year on your investments.

Best of all, learn to defend yourself against the self-serving army of financial planners that aim to pad their own bank accounts, at your expense.

The nine rules of wealth weren’t part of your school curriculum. But it’s not too late to learn them. Take this final class with an entertaining teacher who has already walked to walk. You deserve it.

Be Stiff: The Stiff Records StoryBy Richard Balls

Dave Robinson was once a roadie to Jimi Hendrix. He also managed Brinsley Schwarz and was behind their ill-fated publicity stunt when he flew journalists to New York to see their gig at the Fillmore East. By 1974, he was managing the Hope & Anchor pub in Islington.

Jake Riviera had been road manager for Chilli Willi And The Red Hot Peppers and later Dr Feelgood.

In1976, this maverick pair were to launch Stiff Records, supposedly on the back of a £400 loan from Lee Brilleaux of the Feelgoods. In fact, they never cashed the check.

The genius of Stiff was to take old pub rockers that they knew and turn them into new wave stars. Ian Dury, Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe were all going nowhere until they were signed the label and reinvented. For a while, the major labels didn’t know how to respond to Stiff, particularly their brilliant marketing – coloured vinyl, different coloured sleeves for the completest market and their slogans, such as “If It Ain’t Stiff, It Ain’t Worth a fuck".

Riviera left the label in 1977 to form Radar Records and took Costello and Lowe with him

The label signed quirky acts such as Wreckless Eric, Devo, Rachel Sweet, Lene Lovich and more. Many of them were sent on package tours reminiscent of the Larry Parnes’ tours in the 1960s.

They also launched Stiff America to no little success.

Robinson signed Madness and The Pogues to the label before it went bankrupt in 1986. However, it re-launched in 2006 under new management and is still going strong.

Richard Balls has interviewed over 50 artists and Stiff staff to tell a story that is long overdue. Shane MacGowan, Lene Lovich, Chas Smash, Wreckless Eric and more tell what it was like to work for the world’s most outrageous record label.

Tony Judge, who runs the Be Stiff website has provided lots of rare photos along with badges and memorabilia to make this a celebration of a great record label.

Balls' other book on the life of Ian Dury sold a hefty 30,000 copies, so he has a following.

As ever with Stiff, money was tight. Jake did his sums and reckoned their prestigious date with Television would just about cover their trip to Los Angeles. But the artfully edgy New York band fronted by the charismatic Tom Verlaine, refused to have Stiff’s increasingly infamous punks on their bill. The snub was a bitter blow.

Rat says: “We went to see them and I remember Jake throwing a lot of abuse. ’Show us your tits!’ I think is was what he shouted. The tragic thing about it actually was that we really liked Television and Little Johnny Jewel was what everybody really talked about. That was the first punk single or one of them. They were something else and they gave punk an absolute musical credibility. But their attitude was so punk, because it was completely out there, with Little Johnny Jewel specifically. There is some good stuff on Marque Moon, but the kind of griminess that Richard Hell put on it just wasn’t there. It was like freeform jazz that made sense and it was kind of intellectual. And I was really pleased. ’Okay, I’m in a punk band and everyone’s saying punk bands are three chords. But these guys are really accomplished and you could put them on any stage anywhere‘. So when they said, ‘You can’t do it’, we were actually quite gutted. I know we got a bit spiteful about it. But that was one of the reasons we were a bit spiteful because we thought they’d be on our side. I doubt they’d even heard us. I think it was more our reputation preceding us and Tom Verlaine saying, ‘I’m not having a fucking freak show going on before me’.”
