This book is not for dummies, but it is excellent as an introduction to the language. It was a fabulous help as I prepared for travel to Poland. The book includes a CD that presents all-aural examples and a text that explained all the basic grammar, with essential vocabulary lists and sample sentences. I was exceedingly well-prepared for travel, having used this in conjunction with other media. Does not say the sentence in English, only Polish, but gives the situation or context. I used it for several months of listening to train my ear whenever I drove anywhere, before beginning to take notes from the book. The notebook that resulted was most helpful, even after I was in the country. Ms. Gabryanczyk has done an outstanding job of presenting practice in initial aural immersion and written practice.

This is a good book and a great deal of effort has gone into it. Of course to learn Polish, you will need more than one book. I also like the Teach Yourself Book: "Polish - A Complete Course for Beginners," by Nigel Gotteri and Joanna Michalak-Gray There are a few editions of this book. The one I prefer is an older version, available used. The ISBN number (which you can type in under Books) is: 0-8442-3704-3. It's available used for around $6 (as of May 2017). One of the reasons I like this book is because most of the translations are quite literal, which I think is important if one is trying to learn the language.

I recently moved to Poland for a short term work assignment. I don't speak any Polish and only had about a week's notice, so I needed something that would help me learn some basics quickly. This book was very helpful with learning everyday phrases and common words. It explains the pronunciation of words in an easy to understand manner and provides countless examples of conversations and explanations of cultural quirks. It's definitely a good choice for those who might be traveling to Poland and would like to understand a bit of the language and culture upon arrival.

I've used the book to brush up on my Polish before my first trip to Warsaw. Whether or not you've studied any languages before in school as an English speaker, this will probably be the quickest way for you to learn Polish. It goes through how their consonants and vowels are sounded out, most useful verbs and nouns, and offers enough interesting tidbits about Poland to keep you reading.

I spoke some simple polish as a child and wanted to enhance my ability to speak as well as write in Polish. I have living relatives in Poland which i would like to communicate with possibly by phone as well as writing. I found the book to be very helpful in doing just that. I also can see why it would be difficult for someone without a polish background to pick up a new language such as Polish. It is a difficult language to learn. The book does an excellent job despite the difficulty of the language.

It's a very good book. Of course, as it's for "dummies", the explanation (of grammar) are shorter as possible. However, this book contains a lot of example, very useful vocabulary, the most important words or phrases are remarked and highlighted and suitable audios that helps to understand everything. Moreover, the author tells you some Polish anecdotes, tricks or culture stuff that develop a better understanding.The only problem with this book is that, as all lesson are not organized correctly, you can start with any lesson you want, so, some important details may be missed if you had not studied Polish before. So, if you want to learn Polish easily using this book, you should study some basic stuff before.

This book seems to be well written and simplified enough to make it possible to learn the basics. I have reviewed a couple of others that are so technical that learning even simple phrases looks overwhelming.

This is a great first book to get for learning Polish. Good basic descriptions and introduction to grammar. Also, I lot of good social and cultural tips given along the way through the book. I would recommend to anyone who wants to get started in learning this language.

Stephen Turnock, MA, SM, PhD, CEng, MIMechE is Senior Lecturer in Ship Science at the University of Southampton. About the Author

Jonathan Berk is the A.P. Giannini Professor of Finance at the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University and is a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Before coming to Stanford, he was the Sylvan Coleman Professor of Finance at Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to earning his Ph.D., he worked as an Associate at Goldman Sachs (where his education in finance really began).   Professor Berk’s research interests in finance include corporate valuation, capital structure, mutual funds, asset pricing, experimental economics, and labor economics. His work has won a number of research awards including the TIAA-CREF Paul A. Samuelson Award, the Smith Breeden Prize, Best Paper of the Year in The Review of Financial Studies, and the FAME Research Prize. His paper, “A Critique of Size-Related Anomalies,” was selected as one of the two best papers ever published in The Review of Financial Studies. In recognition of his influence on the practice of finance he has received the Bernstein-Fabozzi/Jacobs Levy Award, the Graham and Dodd Award of Excellence, and the Roger F. Murray Prize.   He served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Finance, Director of the Western Finance Association,  Academic Director of the Financial Management Association, is a Fellow of the Financial Management Association, and is a member of the advisory board of the Journal of Portfolio Management.   Born in Johannesburg, South Africa, Professor Berk is married, with two daughters, and is an avid skier and biker.   Peter DeMarzo is the Mizuho Financial Group Professor of Finance and current Vice President of the American Finance Association. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He currently teaches MBA and Ph.D. courses in Corporate Finance and Financial Modeling. In addition to his experience at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, Professor DeMarzo has taught at the Haas School of Business and the Kellogg Graduate School of Management, and he was a National Fellow at the Hoover Institution.   Professor DeMarzo received the Sloan Teaching Excellence Award at Stanford, and the Earl F. Cheit Outstanding Teaching Award at U.C. Berkeley.   Professor DeMarzo has served as an Associate Editor for The Review of Financial Studies, Financial Management, and the B.E. Journals in Economic Analysis and Policy, as well as a Director of the American Finance Association. He has served as Vice President and President of the Western Finance Association. Professor DeMarzo’s research is in the area of corporate finance, asset securitization, and contracting, as well as market structure and regulation. His recent work has examined issues of the optimal design of contracts and securities, and the influence of information asymmetries on stock prices and corporate investment. He has received numerous awards including the Western Finance Association Corporate Finance Award and the Barclays Global Investors/Michael Brennan best-paper award from The Review of Financial Studies.   Professor DeMarzo was born in Whitestone, New York, and is married with three boys.

A new copy of the book is suppose to contain a code for "MyFinanceLab" access (required for my class) ,either in a packet that came with the book or in the first few pages of the book, but no such code exists in the text! So on top of the steep price I have to spend another $65.00 to receive the code. I assumed this was a mistake and requested a replacement (which arrived quickly) which also lacked a code. Very frustrating and now the class is starting so I don't have time to resolve the issue properly.

Book was in poor condition. Book was also "core" version which was not mentioned in the description. Image of book cover did not represent what the book cover actually looked like. I will be returning this item.

I use this mainly as a reference in addition to my other corp fin books. This book title is slightly more rigorous, though not signficantly, than other leading books in corp fin.

Did not come with the MyFinanceLab access code even though it is being sold as new.

Reading is dry text book reading but informative. Examples in the book are enough to help understand the material. Be careful pairing this purchase with the online lab and problems. See what information your instructor provides first

There are 8 books in this series and the "Search Inside" showed very little of any of them. I knew I wasn't a complete beginner but not sure how to choose any other level. (Several months of lessons as a child--many years ago--and kind of playing around "fake book" style ever since. Can play single notes in the treble clef easily --but not without looking at the keyboard and can't read combos/chords on sight. The bass clef is harder. I can identify single notes about low C but can't play simultaneously with treble notes. Lower than that, and I have to think about it too long.)I share this in case it will help anyone else identify the level this book would be suited for--what the author considers "late elementary". It assumes you know or can figure out the names of notes in treble and bass clefs-- no letter identification-- "A, G#, etc". So you need to be able to identify the notes already.Also important is that there is nothing faster than eighth notes, and not very many exercises with them. What worked very very well for me was that the exercises were written with both treble and bass clef parts BUT rarely played together. There might be a note overlapping at the beginning or in the middle of a measure, but you're not playing both hands simultaneously very often (this is good as it helps with sight reading--individual notes (a few two-note chords in treble or bass but they repeat in the measure--you're not asked to change very quickly. Similarly with the treble and bass notes mainly alternating measures (with a little single-note overlap), this is very manageable. It was very "doable" in that my sight reading improved and I didn't feel overwhelmed.I imagine in the next book -- Low Intermediate-- there are more notes in combination, and more overlap between bass and dtreble clef. Probably also more eighths, sixteenths and complicated rhythm patterns (the rhythm here is pretty straightforward--if a measure has eighth notes, it probably is ALL eighth notes, or a beginning quarter or half note. You don't have to count out patterns in advance ("sight reading!") and its perfect for practicing with a metronome.Great book!

I'm a pianist at the intermediate level, but my sightreading skills are well below par. This book arrived today, I completed the first three exercises and used Harris's method on an arrangment of a Haydn piece from the Haydn-Shaum book (Book I). Much to my delight, I was able to play through the piece correctly and musically despite never having played it before. Harris has you clap the rhythm, make a note of key and time signatures, as well as scan the piece to make a note of finger changes - these are based on finger changes made while playing scales. This kind of prep prior to playing a piece ensures that one sight reads fluently and well.The exercises are musical and incorporate rhythms and finger changes (dotted quarter notes followed by eighth notes etc.) that one would encounter in any piece of music. The rhythm moves from treble to bass clef so both hands are given equal importance.I strongly recommend Harris's books (they are graded, so start at whatever level you're comfortable sight-reading) to anyone who wishes to improve their sight-reading skills, and wants to play a piece musically and fluently from a score at first sight!

Certainly does help with sight reading. I have the earlier volume and working up the books you can see an improvement in how fast you can sight read

Excellent book

This series of sight reading books by Paul Harris are an excellent method to use for improving your sight reading ability. I bought them for my students, but I am also using them. I started with book one and I'm going through the entire series.

My sight reading is coming right along in spite of Paul Harris. Great addition to my method book library though.
